FAMOUS OYSTER/TALABA, Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental

BLOG #5. OYSTER/TALABA, GREEN SHELLS/TAHONG
The best oyster places/seafood of Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental

YouTube video:happi picture21

Himamaylan City is on of the flourishing cities in the central part of the province of Negros Occidental, Philippines. It is rich in aquatic resources that gives jobs to fishermen and local people. Aside from that, they have abundant seafood to feast, fresh and at its best. Since it is mainly compost of sugarcane farms and coastal areas, occupants here are mainly farmers in Haciendas or fishermen. A little number are mainly business owners.

Talaba or oysters are one of the most common seafood here in Himamaylan. There are best season to harvest the said product. The city celebrates the Himaya-an Festival every April 14–25. People gather and eat talaba with friends and other tourists. Talaba is not so expensive, you can have the, "pakapin" or added oyster in your order even you paid the right amount. They are giver and generous in this place.

Talabahan can be found not only in Himamaylan but also in nearby cities. Most of the talabahan stores and eatery are just along the road and the prices are quite reasonable and cheap for a delicious feast.

Prices may differ according to season. Rainy season are not the best to eat talaba, because according to the locals, the talaba are quite small and not to tasty. But, during summer time, talaba sizes are big and tasty. What are you waiting for? Come and visit Himamaylan City, Negros Occidental, Philippines.

1 bucket of talaba  PHP200
1/2 bucket               PHP100
small bowl              PHP 30
You can also buy their special vinigar,"Sinamak", for PHP100.

They will give you more that what you order, they call it "pakapin", so you will add more talaba in your order. The best part of eating talaba is the sauce. Mainly, the sauce here are made of spices and vinegar, mixed together, that gives that amazing flavor of sourness. Believe me or not, it was awesome.

Due to Covid19, we advised you to choose the store best, there are so many talabahan eatery along the road, and check if there are so many customers then choose place with less customers. It is important to wash your hands before and after eating. You can use your bare hands if you want. They have clean water where you can wash your hands later.

If it is your first time to eat talaba, you can ask the server to open the talaba shells for you. It is difficult to open it, you might cut your finger or it will eat up your time just opening its shell. You can also pair it with rice and soda/cola. It is advisable not to drink water right away or it may cause stomachache for those first timers. When yo are not used eating such seafood, better pair it with soda or cola, if you experience stomachache, better see a doctor. Just eat the right amount for you.

Fishermen in Himamaylan City also growing milkfish and other seafood like crabs, milkfish and green shells. There products are harvested and brought to nearby wet market, fresh from the sea. Life is simple here in Himamaylan, yet people are happy with what they are doing. Though life is tough in the time of pandemic, peoples still set their minds to be positive about things. Not even a pandemic can wash out how hard working they are. Salute to the fishermen and the governance of people in this city.

Himamaylan is also a good place to take pictures of the perfect sunset. It was such a beauty and promise you will go back to this place again and again, not only that the people are friendly and smiling, they will also welcome you with warm greeting. Ilonggo people are known to greet strangers whenever they meet one. They will greet you this way, "Mayong hapon," with a smile. This means, they give you respect. Though it was strange for me because we seldom do that to the place where I grew up, never talk to people who you don't know. But here, people greet almost every one. Wow, that is awesome.

The photos are taken in Himamaylan City nearby barangays namely, Barangay Saraet, Barangay Aguisan, Barangay Talaban.

Aside from that, if you want to go chillin', there are nearby resorts where you can swim and enjoy the rest of the day. You can have picnics and talk with people who are fishing at the beach. The water is warm and very nice for the body when it is afternoon. Some beaches are just free, so no need to pay entrance fee here. Other resort has the entrance fee off P10.00/person to P20.00/person. Very cheap but 100% you will enjoy the place. Just don't expect too much, few beaches have restaurants and rest rooms, so if you want to have the complete amenities, you can go to other beach resorts, they have the fee up to P80.00/person. You can travel around the place here in Himamaylan City, it depends upon your location. You can bring your friends and family here. Local are friendly and accommodating.     Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest and can interfere with your daily functions in the family and society. During the pandemic and lockdown, people lost their jobs, many businesses closed, happiness in the outside world becomes limited. For those lives spent on busy streets become empty and people covered with fear, doubt and worries about the future. I am one of those who experienced depression during the lockdown, and it was not an easy journey. When having this situation, judging should be out of the list, but support system from the families should be established.  Caring and telling them how you care is one way to relieve the uncertainties of one's feeling towards the hardest situation. Ensure that God's love is there and the main source of happiness is God and the world is just secondary. Always pray for the one undergoing depression, talk to them, make them feel loved and cared.

MALATAN-OG FALLS 2020- Don Salvador Benedicto-Travel guide

Blog 2: MALATAN-OG FALLS 2020 PART I, II, and III

                                            PART 1

                                          PART II

                                          PART III

Malantan-og falls 2020.

This beautiful falls is located at Eco-Tourism Highway, Don Salvador Benedicto, Negros Occidental, just go to Malatan-og Falls Viewing Deck for inquiry about fees and tour guide.  For specific location, it is located at Barangay Kumaliskis, Don Salvador Benedicto, Negros Occidental. It is just along the highway. You can enjoy the best scenery after 40 minutes walk. You can relax and enjoy nature with one of a kind falls.

What should you know before going there?

Here's how:

1. CERES BUS

If you are from Bacolod City, you can ride a bus from South Ceres Terminal. The fare is around 100 pesos - 150 pesos. You can also wait for the bus along the rode and fees for fare also varies.

2. JEEPNEYS

Riding a jeepney is the best experience we had, the jeepney's going to Don Salvador is located near BDO, Libertad market in Bacolod City. The fair is about 80 to 100 pesos and up. It depends on your location where you want to drop by. If you have extra baggage with you that occupies a lot of space in jeepneys, the drivers will also ask for additional payment.

3. CYCLING

Bacolod city is a place where many bikers love to go to Don Salvador, we highly recommend to use mountain bikes when going there. You need perseverance and courage to do it. But it is free.

You can also ride the jeepney and take your bicycle with you, but they will charge you an additional pay for it. Always remember that there is a difficult area going to Don Salvador and biking is literary not advisable, where in fact, only motorcycles and 4 wheels can only run on this side. Better take public transportation.

What to bring:

1. It depends on your preferences.

- Snacks would be great but there are many snack houses around the place. No need to worry about packing of food, since fresh cooked food are available in all nearby restaurants. If you want to save money, then you can have your own cooked meal with you. But that would be an additional baggage.

Snacks on the deck are not expensive and vendors offer different "pasalubong" delicacies.

Bring extra clothes if you want to swim.

2. Mosquito repellants

- During the rainy season, expected that there are bugs there. Most likely you don't want to be fighting with the mosquitos. Apply off lotions to avoid being bitten my mosquitos. Giants mosquitos are all over the place. Just kidding, they are not so big as Godzilla.

- Wear leggings or any pants with soft fabric so that you can move easily. Jackets or soft fabric shirts are good for hot weather o any weather will do. If you want to avoid bugs and pointed leaves that causes cuts on your legs. It depends upon you.

HOW MUCH?

Once you arrive at the place, you have you write your information in a local information desk and pay 50.00 for the entrance fee on the DECK only and for the environmental fee. If you plan to hike and proceed to your adventure, then you have to prepare P 300.00 for the tour guide.

Note: You are not allowed to go there by yourself as community guidelines should be followed.

MAP FROM BACOLOD:

Always tell the driver to drop you at Malata-og view deck.

From Bacolod to the View deck

drop point- View Deck

Malatan-og View Deck

Itinerary to Malatan-og Falls:

BY JEEPNEY:

8:00 A.M arrival at the jeepney station ( 100 pesos), if you bring a bike (100 pesos) fare.

9:30 A.M arrival at the deck, tell the conductor to drop you at the Malantan-og falls deck

(50 pesos environmental fee)

10:00 AM. trekking, around 40 minutes if you are fast hikers (300 pesos for the tour guide)

10:40 or 11:00 A.M arrival at the beautiful falls.  You can take photos or swimming if you want.

take your time to enjoy after a long walk. You can go back at any time at the deck except if there is rain. Not good for hiking.

NOTE: ALWAYS BRING EXTRA CASH for unexpected expenses.

Reminders: If you are only taking a public transportation, better be early to go back at the deck. Few transportation passes by especially jeepneys, sometimes the last trip is at 3 o'clock p.m at the town proper of Don Salvador. If you want to ride a bus, it will take 30 minutes or an hour to wait.

You can also watch our YouTube vlog: happi picture21. Just click the videos above.

We have three episodes that completed our journey. I also have with me my friend, Yam Recopuerto, who is always on the go to visit places with me. She is also my travel buddy and also took videos in some our our videos.

a very fulfilling moment

Dominador is our tour guide, he is so kind

That was rainy afternoon, tired, but we enjoyed a lot

A view from a distance

Yam's encounter

the falls are just behind us

If you want to tour around, a bicycle is indeed a big help
Please use a mountain bike, we had a struggle because of using another kind of bicycle
but we are thankful for the people who let us borrow bicycles

a beautiful view of the mountains

COVID19 reminders:

When we went there 4 months ago, the cases of covid19 was not as serious as of today. So, we were able to just take off our mask and no face shield required. Because of the current situation, better do the following:

1. Try to search for tourism office contact information to know more details on what to do when travelling to Don Salvador. You can check the tourism website in Facebook.

You can also watch this:

https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=331416074595334&extid=pWzKQQte8LphErYU

2. Bring with you your own hand sanitizer, alcohol, tissue and clean water for drinking.

3. Observe proper health protocol and follow their health guidelines.

4. Always wash your hands whenever you can.

5. Write your information in their contract tracing form truthfully so that they can contact you easily if necessary.

6. Due to higher number of cases, better wear your mask and bring your face shield.

7. Just bring light personal belonging so that it will be easy for you to move.
